Safety on the Job

Safety is important in every industry.  Real estate, however seems to need a couple extra reminders since on a daily basis agents and brokers can find themselves with a perfect stranger in not so perfect circumstances such as a vacant home or building.

I think one of the most important things that any licensee should do is make sure someone knows where you are headed.  It's an easy one to overlook since a request can come in to see a property while you are out on the road, but it's important that someone knows the exact address of the property you are showing.

Don't ever put strangers in your car.  Meet them at the property instead. When you pull up, make sure you don't park where your car can get blocked in.  Before you get out of your car, take a picture of the prospect's vehicle and license plate number.  Better yet, text the pictures back to the office so they have it on hand if needed. If you can get a picture of the prospect as well, do it!

Keep your cell phone with you in hand while showing property. The last thing you want to do is have to dig it out of your bag or your pocket if you find yourself in need of immediate help.  A colleague of mine has even had someone on the other line while showing a vacant building with no electricity.

Use the buddy system whenever possible. There is nothing wrong with asking a colleague to join you. When I've been unable to have someone accompany me, I'll tell a prospect that a colleague is showing property in the area and will be stopping by momentarily.

Carry pepper spray with you.  You can purchase cans that attach right to your keyring. And keep your keys in your hand - they can be used as a weapon if needed. Also, if you find yourself in danger, set off the panic button on your key ring so your car alarm goes off to alert someone you are in need of help.

If you are attacked, SCREAM!  Yell "Fire", "Call 911".  Don't keep silent!

Keep your eyes open and stay aware at all times. I feel like I should say that one again..... Keep your eyes open and stay aware at ALL times!

There are many tips out there and your real estate office may have their own safety policies and procedures in place. Here are a couple of very worthwhile links:
