Over the last couple of months I've been to quite a few offices and have been greeted not only with a handshake but also by a wagging tail and generous kiss. No, the last two are not from my client but from their best friend of the canine variety. I find those being my favorite meetings as having a dog around adds so much to the atmosphere.
It's a great ice-breaker and conversation starter. It instantly builds rapport and gives you something to have in common especially if you have pets too. I also find that it lightens the mood. Who can't help but smile at that cute face? Even though you may have serious items to discuss having a dog around can lighten up the mood and tends to make us feel at home.
One thing to remember however is that not everyone is comfortable around dogs. Out of courtesy, always ask. If it's going to cause someone anxiety or an allergic reaction, make sure you have an office with a door where Fido can stay until after your client or guest leaves.
